Voodoo Reels

Voodoo Reels: Slot Overview

Developer Stakelogic broadens their thematic horizons with Voodoo Reels, a slot full of pins, dolls, and creepy imagery. When Stakelogic goes darker the results are usually pretty interesting. Initially, this is also the case for Voodoo Reels, a highly attractive looking slot advertising ‘unlimited free spins’. Unlimited is a lot of free spins though, does reality match the premise?

Voodoo Reels is a little spooky in a camply playful way. It’s not the dread fest Gods of Death was, but there is a touch of the macabre going on. Here we find a standard 5-reel, 10-payment game area spinning in some rural backwater, surrounded by gnarled trees, skulls, and lanterns. Something possesses the organ player during bonus rounds when the music takes a turn for the sinister. Until then, the low key base game sound effects suit the cartoony voodoo romp. It’s a nice look utilising a lighter treatment of the theme, which Stakelogic has paired with a matching math model. What that means is medium volatile action, coupled with an RTP of 96.49%.

Voodoo Reels offers bets ranging from 10 p/c to £/€100 per spin. As is often the case in Stakelogic games this is just the base bet. Players have the choice of engaging a Super Stake option, doubling the bet in return for certain benefits which change game by game. In Voodoo Reels, when activated, the Super Stake randomly triggers the voodoo doll pick & click feature covered below. This theoretically occurs once every 52 spins and can produces better results than general base gaming, so is something to consider.

Voodoo Rees may be played on any device, with the goal of landing three or more matching symbols on a payline. All carry the taint of voodoo, including the low pay 10-A card icons designed like wood carvings to fit the theme. From there, we get higher-paying crosses, candles, skulls, and a white face-painted chap in a top hat. Premium symbols are worth a payout of 15 to 50 times your stake when they land in a line of five. On a side note, the hatted man also pays out for two of a kind – so does the wild symbol, worth up to 500x for five of a kind. The wild also substitutes for all regular pay symbols.

Voodoo Reels: Slot Features

Voodoo Reels – free spins

Voodoo Reels comes bundled with several features. First out we have the pick & click bonus which is accessed when 6 yarn ball symbols have been collected. These symbols may appear at any time in the base game and a meter at the top left of the screen records your progress. Changing the stake level saves the meter at its current level. When triggered, three voodoo dolls appear on screen where picking one awards one of the following extras:

  • The Wild Mixer feature comes with three respins where 2 to 6 randomly positioned wilds are added on each one.
  • The Sticky Voodoo feature also comes with three respins using randomly selected sticky symbols. When sticky symbols land, the remaining positions spin until no new sticky symbols or wilds land. There is a win evaluation; then a new symbol is chosen to be sticky for the following spin.

Landing 3, 4, or 5 voodoo doll scatters awards 6, 8, or 10 free spins, as well as an 0.2x, 2x, or 20x payout respectively. After the regular free spins have been played, they’re always followed by the Unlimited Free Spins feature in which colossal 3×3 symbols appear on reels 2 to 4. Unlimited Free Spins continue until 3 voodoo symbols (appearing on reels 1 and 5 only) are collected.

Voodoo Reels: Slot Verdict

Initially, Voodoo Reels was a pretty fun game to play. It has a nice atmosphere, helped by the decent graphics and harpsichord Adams Family-like soundtrack. There are also plenty of features to try, plus the super stake adds an additional element to play around with.

After a while, Voodoo Reels starts to lose its sparkle because there is a feeling that you just aren’t going to get anywhere. Its hook is the unlimited free spins feature, lurking just below the surface like a patient alligator. The challenge of hitting them rides high to start with yet can easily dwindle when time drags on. The yarn collection thing, leading to the pick & click feature, helps negate this to an extent.

Another thing that might dampen spirits of Stakelogic enthusiasts is the exclusion of a gamble feature which used to be a certainty in their games. It seems the studio is in the process of phasing it out, or at least aren’t as liberal with it as they have been in the past. Despite the subject matter, Voodoo Reels is neither a heavy nor high-performance slot, though it is entertaining enough for those keen on a bit of light voodoo gaming. There are plenty of features, and the atmosphere is fun to lose yourself in for a bit, yet it feels more like an illusion than actual magic.
