Vault of Anubis

Vault of Anubis Slot: Overview

So far developer Red Tiger has notched up a couple of grid slots for players to tumble through. We had the fruity filled Fruit Snap, and the gem encrusted Royal Gems to name but a few. Vault of Anubis is their first with an Egyptian theme and has a particular focus on the jackal-headed god. This god of the underworld, and interestingly god of the helpless, has starred in countless Egyptian themed slots. This time, players delve into his vault, whatever that is, in the hopes of stringing together clusters of wins. Just like the grid format, the Egyptian theme is no stranger to the Red Tiger drawing board, so the confluence of their expertise in grids and subject raises expectations. Will it be any good? Time to tumble in and uncover the answer.

With plenty of Egypt themed slots under their belt, Red Tiger has talent for bringing this ancient civilisation on the reels. Or in this case, a grid, made up of 7 columns with between 5 or 6 rows which tumble into position with each new spin. The game area is positioned at the top of red-carpeted stairs, while two jackal-headed statues brandishing serpent topped staffs stand guard to either side. The dimly lit scene and music accentuates the solemn mood, and it’s pretty one, which makes a good first impression.

Step one is selecting a bet which can be done by hitting the stake button and choosing an option from 10 p/c to £/€150 per tumble. For that, players get an RTP of 95.74% and a medium/high volatility. Players win rewards by landing clusters of 5 or more similar symbols. These matching symbols must connect horizontally or vertically; diagonal connection is not permitted. Winning clusters then disappear off the grid to let new symbols fall down into place. This increases the chances of scoring better payouts, as multiple wins are possible from single spins.

Red Tiger has designed a whole new batch of original symbols for Vault of Anubis split into low and high pay groups. The first symbol is a golden bowl, followed by clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades, all intricately styled like Ancient Egyptian jewellery. You see these card suit symbols everywhere, but Red Tiger has freshened them up which is a small yet appreciated touch. The high pays are also well designed icons of the genre such as scarabs, a crook and flail, Eye of Horus, and Anubis as the most profitable. For an idea of symbol values, low pays range from 0.1x – 200x the stake for clusters of 5 – 30. Rewards rise for the high pays from 0.4x – 750x for clusters of 5 – 30. The wild symbol comes in handy, as it can land anywhere to substitute for any of the regular pay symbols.

Vault Spins explained

Consecutive cluster wins are not only fun and profitable, but are instrumental in helping trigger the bonus game. The Vault Spins symbol is the scatter, and when 4 are in view, they award 10 Free Spins which comes with an unlimited win multiplier. The scatters rarely, if ever, land 4 at a time on the initial spin, so it is through cascade wins that they are usually revealed. Cascades are even more desirable during the bonus game, because whenever a winning cluster is cleared off the grid, it adds +1 to the win multiplier. The win multiplier does not reset between spins, and there is no theoretical limit to how high it can go. New ‘Spin’ symbols also appear, and each one can add up to 8 more spins to extend the round .

A couple of more features remain to be covered. The first is that high paying symbols can land at any time in super-sized form. These Super Symbols appear in 2×2 or 3×3 sizes and more than one can land at once. Also helping create clusters, the Generous Gods feature can trigger randomly at any moment. When active, the statues beside the grid sprinkle multiple wild symbols across the reels.

The last extra is a gamble feature which can be selected after a win. When selected, players are presented with a Gamble Wheel which is separated into green and red segments next to a ladder of ascending prizes. Players can increase the prize they gamble for, which increases the red segment on the wheel. Hit gamble and a needle spins, if it lands on green the player wins and can repeat the procedure. If it settles on red, then the win is forfeit, and the feature ends.

Vault of Anubis Slot: Verdict

Vault of Anubis isn’t one of those epic grid slots that results in brutally punishing sessions or ultra-long sequences of cascades and features. It’s more rounded than that and accessible to those looking for a less intense experience. The math model is still quite volatile though, which means you can have batches of low value/nothing spins, punctuated by impressive runs of consecutive cluster wins when its on.

Naturally, the game gets an extra kick during the Vault Spins feature, but interestingly it’s the features that are one of Vault of Anubis’ weak spots. The extras on offer are great when they trigger, but it feels like Red Tiger could have expanded them to push the game a little further. That’s not a criticism of what Vault of Anubis has, and does though. At full power, sweet runs can fire and a potential of up to 5,469 times your stake is up for grabs. That figure might not compete with the big players in the category, but is a respectable amount all the same, and a lot better than that last couple of Red Tiger releases we’ve seen.

The end result is a strong amalgamation of grid slot mechanics and Egyptian theme – two areas that Red Tiger has experience with. It’s not really the champ of either category but it’s a well-built grid slot with, outstanding visuals, fun moments and a decent potential to boot.
