Untamed Wilds

Untamed Wilds (Yggdrasil Gaming): Overview

Having spoken to many casino managers and developer representatives throughout the years, they all say the same thing – “guys, you wouldn’t believe the games people play!” As a hardcore gambler and someone who frequents various gambling communities or casino streams, it’s easy to think that the majority of players are the same, that everyone’s into high variance games, that RTP is common knowledge and that win potential matters. This is not the case, as it turns out. Most players, even high rollers, will just pick something that looks fun in hope to have a good time.

Booting up Untamed Wilds for the first time was one of those moments where we had to stop in our tracks and think a bit outside of the box. In our world, it really takes something extra to make the old standard 5×3 setup interesting, especially when the paylines are fixed and even more so when there are only 20 of them. Trying not to be too narrow-minded, we set about spinning the reels to see whether it would make our neuron’s dendrites blossom or not.

To give you an idea what it’s all about, the game shows some striking similarities in gameplay to Yggdrasil’s 2016 release Seasons. Untamed Wilds is a 5 reel, 20 payline slot that is playable across all devices from as little as 8 cents to 100€ per spin, which means it’s suitable for all type of players and gambling budgets. It comes with three game modes with unique features that can produce extra wilds as well as multipliers. There’s also a free spins game where up to 60 free spins can be triggered.

If your balance allows it, Untamed Wilds will take you to various Arctic regions during your session where you’ll get to experience everything from the aurora borealis to the snow-capped mountains of Alaska. On the reels, you’ll see four lower value card suit symbols with animal footprints on them as well as more rewarding animal premiums represented by squirrels, owls, wild cats, arctic foxes and wild boars. The wild cat lynx is the most lucrative, giving you 30 times your stake for a 5 of a kind combination.

During gameplay, the game will switch randomly between three different Game Modes – Bear, Moose and Wolf mode. 10 spins into any mode, it can switch to another one randomly. Each of the three modes has its own unique wild along with a modifier extra. This is what’s on offer:

  • Bear Mode – if the bear wild awards a win, it will expand in a cross pattern. As seen in the image above, it will add a bear wild on all sides of the central wild.
  • Moose Mode – will award a randomly chosen multiplier that applies to all wins in the spin. The possible multipliers are decided by the number of wilds that landed. More wilds also mean higher multipliers. If you land 5 wilds, for example, it will give you a random multiplier of 7x, 8x, 9x or 10x.
  • Wolf Mode – if the wolf wild is to give you a win, it will duplicate itself to another position. The position is chosen to give the best possible win out of all positions.

There’s also a Free Spins game to trigger which will give you more of the same – 3, 4 or 5 northern light scatter symbols anywhere in view will give you 7, 15 or 30 spins respectively. With the night sky illuminated by polar lights (an aurora is a natural light display and the result of disturbances in the magnetosphere directly caused by solar wind), the free spins round will be played with the active game mode when triggering the feature. That’s about all there is to it, except it’s also possible to retrigger the feature to bring up your total number of spins to a maximum of 60.

Untamed Wilds (Yggdrasil Gaming): Verdict

Untamed Wilds is far from a clone but does bear some striking similarities to Seasons, a classic Yggdrasil slot that received praise for its innovative gameplay and outstanding visuals when released in 2016. Not only do they have a lot in common when you look at the themes, the gameplay is also built roughly around the same idea, although Seasons has four different game modes on offer whereas Untamed Wilds only has three.

Whichever one of them you choose to play, these are not slot machines for those chasing life-changing wins. Though there’s a maximum payout of 2500 times your stake to be won here, more realistic are wins of around 500 to 1000 times your stake on the best of days. Medium variance, and with a well-balanced mathematical design, Untamed Wilds will be perfectly suitable for anyone with a relaxed attitude towards gambling just looking to be entertained for a while.
