Thor’s Lightning

Thor’s Lightning (Red Tiger): Review

Having reviewed two Norse-themed slots this week already has nearly made it into a jaded routine. Thankfully, not only does Red Tiger Gaming’s contribution turn out to be the visually most appealing out of the trio, it’s also intense and immensely entertaining. The action, in this epic adventure that is based on the legend of the hammer-wielding god Thor, takes place on a 7×7 grid and makes use of cluster mechanics. It comes with an array of features that includes base game extras as well as two different bonus games. Thor’s Lightning accepts stakes from between 0.20€ to 40€ per spin and has an industry standard RTP of 96.08%.

Visually, it’s breathtakingly beautiful when you take a second to appreciate what’s in front of you. Set in a snowy mountain range, Thor’s powerful hammer, Mjölnir, is seen to the side of the grid set, partly covered in snow and seemingly abandoned. You’ll also see massive blocks of stone peacefully hovering in the air, all covered in neon-blue runes. It’s undoubtedly a majestic sight and quite possibly the aftermath of an epic battle that we see here.

Opening the paytable, we see 4 rune stones representing the low-value symbols as well as 4 premium stone carvings out of which Thor’s hammer is of the highest value, giving you 25 times your stake should you land 40 of them, horizontally or vertically adjacent to each other, as part of a cluster. Symbols that are part of a winning combination explode to leave room for new symbols that drop from above, giving you a chance to win repeatedly until no more winning combinations appear.

Aside from the wild symbol that does all the regular duties of a wild, there are no other special symbols included in the game.

Thor’s Lightning (Red Tiger): Features

In the base game, one of two enhancers can randomly come into play:

  • Lightning Strike – Thor appears, shooting lightning bolts at the reels to remove low-value symbols or transform a random selection of symbols into matching ones – even into wilds.
  • Hammer Strike – Thor appears, throwing his mighty hammer onto the reels to smash 2×2 symbol blocks, replacing them with premiums or he will nudge random rows or reels, resulting in winning combinations.

Smack in the middle of the grid set you’ll see a 3×3 stone block with 9 inactive tiles. Landing adjacent winning clusters unlocks the tiles and if you break all 8 outer tiles in one chain reaction sequence you’ll trigger either the Valhalla Free Spins or Muspell Free Spins:

  • Valhalla Free Spins – a new 7×7 grid set is introduced made up entirely of blank spaces. Gold shield symbols drop onto the grids, remaining locked in place as the free spins are played. At the end of the free spins, each shield reveals a random stake multiplier which is added together to award you a winning total.
  • Muspell Free Spins – here you’ll play on a 7×7 grid set with all low-value symbols removed.  The Lava Shower feature may also randomly come into play, eradicating one or more type of symbols for a free spin. Furthermore, there’s also a Lava Flow feature that may randomly activate, creating identical symbols on connected reels.

Thor’s Lightning (Red Tiger): Verdict

Normally, the relatively low 1800 times your stake max win potential here would not offer us the thrill we’re looking for in a slot, but with Thor’s Lightning we’re willing to make an exception due to the excellent visuals, first-rate playability and not the least, the entertaining features.

It’s an altogether stunning slot with an eery string instrumental to set the tone that will surely entertain the masses. In our opinion, Thor’s Lightning would even have been one of Red Tiger’s best efforts to date if only they would have bumped up the win potential to at least 5000x.
