The Magic Orb Hold & Win: Slot Overview
iSoftBet‘s bulging Hold & Win range of slots gets a sorcerous boost from a grid slot entry titled The Magic Orb. Since grid slots don’t pop up in the series much, if ever, The Magic Orb was a welcome breath of fresh air. Especially so after some of the last few Hold & Wins we’d reviewed had felt a bit forced, stale even. Here was a chance to clear the slate and see if the series had any tricks left up its sleeve. It turns out there are a couple to be found in what ended up being an enjoyable slot, though not an outstanding one.
The Magic Orb’s magic angle is covered by some twisty decorations around its 7×7 game panel, a bit of lightning, and a bizarre, almost alien environment. In this place, wherever it might be, rocks balance precariously upon each other before a hazy pinky, purply sky. It’s kind of magical, and good enough to invoke a level of intrigue as to how the actual gaming performs.
Playable on tablets, mobiles, or desktop devices, The Magic Orb provides stakes of 20 p/c to £/€20 per drop. Or, if activating the Super Bet, add an extra 25% to the cost to double the chance for more Orb prizes. Each drop dumps 48 symbols onto the reels, as the symbol in the middle never moves. This is the Magic Orb itself, which is lifeless most of the time, yet it occasionally triggers the odd modifier or awards one of the two bonus games. Medium/high volatile, The Magic Orb generates an RTP value of 96.0%.
Using a cluster pays system, wins are awarded when 5 or more matching symbols connect horizontally, vertically, or a combination of both. Gems are popular here, as all 8 pay symbols comprise them. On the low side are four variously coloured non-bordered gems worth 2 to 10x the bet for a 15+ sized cluster, while highs are four gold-bordered gems worth 25 to 500x for a cluster of the same size. One last symbol before we move on to features is the wild symbol. Wilds replace any other symbols except bonus or scatters to form winning clusters.
The Magic Orb Hold & Win: Slot Features
If there is one thing The Magic Orb does not lack, its features. From cascades to four modifiers, a Hold & Win feature, and free drops, players have plenty to explore.
Winning symbols are removed from the board, allowing new symbols to fall down to fill the gaps below them. If new clusters are formed by this process, the feature repeats.
The Magic Orb
In the middle of the reels sits the Magic Orb, which never cascades. On any spin, it may randomly activate to award one of the following modifiers:
- Transform – the Orb picks symbols on the reels and transforms them into another symbol type to help create wins.
- Wild – wilds are added to the grid to create wins.
- Multiplier – a multiplier of x2, x3, x5, or x10 is created for the duration of that spin.
- Destruction – all pay symbols except one is shattered from the reels.
- Free Drops – automatically triggers a round of free spins.
- Hold&Win – automatically triggers Hold & Win respins.
Free drops are awarded from the Magic Orb or when 3 scatters naturally land. During this bonus, a progressive win multiplier is included, which increases by +1 following cascades. During free drops, the Magic Orb can award Transform, Wild, Destruction, or Additional Drops.
Hold & Win Feature
Awarded by the Magic Orb or when at least 5 Hold & Win coin scatter symbols land in view. Coins are collected to reset spins back to their starting value of 3 and to climb a panel to win prizes. Filling the pot awards the Mega Prize worth 250x, while the lesser pots are the Mini, Major, and Maxi, worth 25x, 50x, or 100x the bet, respectively. Triggering this feature guarantees you will win at least a Mini Prize Pot.
The Magic Orb Hold & Win: Slot Verdict
Around the time of testing, it was announced that scientists had observed the first living robots reproducing in a way not seen in animals or plants. Naturally, there’s a lot more to the story but, it’s not hard to have dystopic visions of these xenobots endlessly replicating themselves and taking over the world. In the same way, it feels like the Hold & Win range has taken on a life of its own, one iSoftBet has lost control over and is now replicating at an exponential rate. At the way things are going, maybe someday, all that’s left will be mounds of trash and hordes of xenobots playing Hold & Win games. Hashtag shudder.
Don’t shudder too hard just yet, though, because The Magic Orb is one of the more interesting selections from iSoftBet’s Hold & Win range. For one, it’s a grid slot, whereas most of its sister slots tend to be simplistic 5×3 sort of affairs, so there’s a bit of diversity. It’s also got just about everything a grid slot needs – loads of modifiers, cascades, free drops with a progressive multiplier, oh, and a streak respin side bonus. A touch of innovation is even supplied by the centrally located Magic Orb. In some ways, a pain since the Orb literally takes up prime real estate that could have been utilised by pay symbols to form clusters. At other times the Orb Prizes help kick start a chain reaction of wins, so it’s a pro and con thing. What’s easier to fall for is a max win figure of 15,000x, which is respectable enough for a grid slot, and noticeably high for a Hold & Win game.
Despite the big numbers, The Magic Orb doesn’t feel destined for big things. There’s nothing off-putting, it’s pretty magical, but nothing really thrusts the game to greatness either. Maybe all those gems and rocks caused a personality deficit because even though the playthrough went fine, we weren’t left with a major desire for round two.
