Rainbow Wilds Megaways

Rainbow Wilds Megaways: Slot Overview

One of Iron Dog Studio’s earlier games was a cutely Celtic elf infested slot titled Rainbow Wilds (2018). It appears the game was ripe for a remake as the studio has revived it in spirit while attaching a Megaways engine on license from BTG. Some may be shuddering at the thought of wading through another Irish themed slot, yet Rainbow Wilds Megaways does deviate from the norm in several ways. For one, it avoids being overly leprechaun-centric by mixing in fantasy elements to provide a more unique feel.

Played using 6 reels, what adds some diversity is the enchanted woodland location, populated by ‘noble elks and elves of the night‘. Twisting trees frame the reels, while red cap mushrooms make up the foreground. The view conjures up an Irish atmosphere while touching on a magical side of Celtic culture. Iron Dog does its bit to show there is more to being Irish than shamrocks and Guinness. A leprechaun is present, but he seems intended primarily for marketing purposes than as the game’s focal point. Will that disappoint fans of traditional Irish themed slots? Possibly, so don’t expect him to mince about, tossing modifiers onto the reels like he often does.

The original Rainbow Wilds slot was a highly volatile game, and Iron Dog has pushed that even further, rating the volatility here as ‘very high‘. There is sizeable potential to match, as well as a default RTP of 95.82% – rising to 96.3% when engaging either feature buys. The fantastical odyssey is possible on any device, where stakes from 10 p/c to £/€50 may be set.

On to the symbols, where the forest wraps its tendrils around the 10-A low pays, worth up to 1.5 x the bet. In the high pay section, we find horseshoes, Claddagh rings, beer mugs, elves, elks, and leprechauns. These character symbols return prizes of 5 to 10 times your stake for combinations six symbols long.

Rainbow Wilds Megaways – free spins

Features revolve around free spins and three different wild symbols – a regular, a mushroom wild, as well as sticky wilds. Each has a different ability, though all substitute for pay symbols to complete winning combinations. Central to the action, however, is the cascade system which removes winning combinations of matching symbols from the reels, allowing new ones to tumble down into the gaps. Consecutive tumbles are possible and are the key to unlocking extra spins, covered below. Megaways alters the number of symbols each reel holds, from 2 to 7, producing up to 117,649 ways to win when maxed out. Each spin is different, keeping the action unpredictable as Megaways is famous for.

The wilds are also central to the action here, and come in 3 forms:

  • Regular wilds appear in the base game or free spins on reels 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6, carrying a win multiplier of x1. More than one can appear on a spin.
  • Only one Mushroom wild at a time can appear on reels 3 or 4 in the base game or free spins. When it lands, it creates up to 3 mushroom wilds on reels 2-5. Regular wild multipliers have their multiplier increased by 1 when a mushrooming wild grows on the same reel.
  • The third type, Sticky wilds appear on reels 2-4 in free spins only. Sticky wild multipliers start on x1 and increase by 1 on each consecutive tumble. They are only sticky during a tumble sequence though, so are removed between spins.

Free spins are activated when 4 or more consecutive tumbles occur. Exactly 4 tumbles awards 8 free spins, and each successive tumble after 4 awards 2 extra free spins up to 14. Free spins may be added in a peculiar two-pronged way; either 4 consecutive wins gives you 2 additional free spins, with each successive win above 4 adding an extra spin up to 6, or consecutive losses award free spins in the same way.

In addition to any wild multipliers, there is also a global win multiplier starting at x1, rising by +1 after successful tumbles. Unlike wilds, this win multiplier does not reset between spins. On a positive note, wild multipliers and the win multiplier are multiplied together for better payouts.

At the top of the tumble meter on the left-hand side is a bonus buy button. For 85 times the bet you can buy 8 free spins, or 115 times the bet gets you 10 free spins.

Rainbow Wilds Megaways: Slot Verdict

It’s hard to prevent a small sigh escaping when another leprechaun game crosses the desk at times, though Rainbow Wilds Megaways isn’t exactly a typical Irish slot. Enough conventional imagery is on hand to satisfy most players into the Irish thing, while also including elements to blur categorisation. The enchanted forest setting might be a little too much for some, but variety is the spice of life as they say.

Iron Dog has taken to Megaways like a duck to water, and they know how to nudge the engine to do interesting things. While Rainbow Wilds Megaways doesn’t push the system to its limit like 1 Million Megaways BC did, it has been saddled with several features to create a relatively unique experience. The selection of wilds, well, sticky and mushroom wilds mainly, boosted by the free spins multiplier, can be coaxed into producing wins as high as 12,000x the bet.

It is very volatile though, and free spin rounds can pass by without seeming like anything has really happened. It doesn’t help that Rainbow Wilds Megaways isn’t the most exciting game to play, even when good things are building up. There is a disconnect between graphics and sounds, and little in the way of big win celebrations to spike adrenaline.

Still, it’s got decent stats and features, so really, it largely comes down to whether you feel like frolicking through a forest. Of course, we had to have leprechauns, yet it’s not completely stereotypical, so good on Iron Dog for taking a common genre on a bit of a tangent.
