Rainbow Riches Megaways: Review

The first encounter we had with Barcrest’s famous Leprechaun now seems like ages ago. Looking for something different to try, other than the usual 243 ways slots that we were playing with consistent regularity back in the days, Rainbow Riches seemed contrasting enough. Aside from having a fantastic session on it, which included a free spins round with a ridiculous amount of retriggers, what stuck to mind was the oddly primitive, but seducing sound effects and visuals. It wasn’t until later that we became aware of the iconic status of the game, especially in the UK, where soon after its release it became one of the most popular slot machines in recent times.

The time has now come for the Leprechaun to take a step into the modern era in a slot that preserves the classic feel of the original, but also benefits from the captivating action that the Megaways engine has to offer. Following a long series of Rainbow Riches games, this one utilises 6 reels and a random number of symbols per reel on each spin that can result in up to 117,649 ways to win when fully expanded. It comes with cascading reels, a Super Gem Bonus feature that turns all visible gems into matching symbols, and a Free Spins round with an unlimited win multiplier. You can play Rainbow Riches Megaways on all devices from between 20 cents to 20€ per spin.

In terms of creative direction, the developers have made sure to keep the final design true to the original formula. This goes for all aspects of the game – sound, look and feel. With an Irish folklore theme, the reels are encased in gold coupled with a picturesque lush green countryside backdrop. Just below the unmistakable logo, a rainbow shoots out of a pot of gold filled to the brim with gold coins. On the reels you’ll see the usual A to 10 royal values as well as blue, green, purple and orange gems. The most lucrative is the diamond with 6 of a kind giving you 50 times your stake. The wild symbol is represented by a horseshoe and substitutes for all regular symbols.

Rainbow Riches Megaways: Features

Most people reading are likely already familiar with the Megaways game engine by now. Originally developed by Big Time Gaming, the concept of Megaways revolves around its shape-shifting reels that, in this particular game, can give you an outcome of between 2 to 7 symbols on reels 1 and 6, and between 2 and 6 symbols on the remaining reels, every time you hit the spin button. With some simple mathematical calculations, it means that each spin can bring about between 324 to 117,649 ways to win. Above reels 2, 3, 4 and 5, you’ll also see a horizontal reel that delivers additional symbols, contributing to adjacent wins, as well as special symbols that only appear on this reel.

Moreover, the Megaways concept is usually combined with cascading reels mechanics, which is also the case here – all symbols part of a winning combination explode to make room for new symbols. This chain effect repeats until no more winning combinations appear in view.

Rainbow Riches Megaways comes with the Super Gem Bonus feature. It’s quite similar to Blueprint Gaming’s mystery symbols feature, but instead of appearing as a question mark across the reel set, it triggers when a Super Gem appears on the horizontal reel. When it does, all high-value gemstone symbols in view are transformed into one matching randomly chosen gemstone.

Though offering excellent potential even in the base game, the Free Spins feature is the key to land the truly substantial wins. It comes into play when 4 or more scatter symbols land in view anywhere on the main reels and will give you 12 starting spins. For each additional scatter in view, 5 extra Free Spins are awarded. As is the case with all these Bonanza-type games, it’s all about the unlimited win multiplier which increases by 1 on each winning cascade without ever reverting. During the free spins round, +1, +2 and +3 symbols may appear on the top reel to give you additional spins.

If you don’t want to wait for the free spins feature to drop organically, you can opt for the Buy Pass feature. For a cost of 100 times your stake, you’ll gain direct access to the free spins. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, you could go for the Take a Chance option instead. Hoping that the arrow lands on the green segment of the circle, you’re odds of triggering the feature depends on the chosen stake – for a cost of 25, 50 or 75 times your stake, you will get a 25%, 50% or 75% chance of triggering the bonus respectively.

Finally, there is the Bonus Bank feature, which reduces the price of the free spins bonus. ‘Bank Off Wins’ adds all wins to balance, ‘Bank All Wins’ adds all wins to the ‘Bonus Bank’, and ‘Bank Small Wins’ adds wins 3x stake or less to the ‘Bonus Bank’.

Rainbow Riches Megaways: Final Verdict

Aside from a couple of minor deviations, Rainbow Riches Megaways is a rather typical Megaways offering. For example, it’s not too common for these slots to have different reel height settings as is the case here where the middle reels will give you no more than a maximum of 6 symbols as opposed to 7 on the first and last reels. Moreover, we found the RTP to be slightly lower than what you normally see in other Megaways slots, but being Barcrest, whose slots are usually around the 95% mark, we’re not too surprised.

Medium to high variance, it offers outstanding potential reaching well over 10,000 times your stake. High roller should take notice, however, that the game is capped at a maximum payout of 250,000€. Overall, it’s a Megaways game as good as any other and will appeal to all players that enjoy these types of slots that are known, not only for their great potential, but also the extended and entertaining gameplay they have to offer. Rainbow Riches Megaways is, in our opinion at least, by far the best game in the Rainbow Riches series.
