Phoenix Reborn (Play’n GO): Review
Fads and trends come and go in iGaming, just like they do in other industries. History-themed slots, however, remain as relevant as ever before. The ancient historical eras most frequently recycled include Greece, Egypt, Rome, the Viking age and, as in this case, the Aztec civilisation. Famous for their sophisticated system of agriculture, highly complex calendar system and pyramids, the Aztecs were eventually wiped out by an outbreak of smallpox contracted from the Europeans.
In this 5-reel, 40-payline title powered by Swedish studio Play’n GO, we hop on the time-machine to experience the Aztec culture at the height of its glory. Here you’ll benefit from the Phoenix wild that expands to give you a fully stacked wild reel. In the free spins feature, where up to 40 free spins can be triggered, one such wild reel is guaranteed on each spin. Phoenix Reborn is a highly volatile slot that can be played across all devices from between 0.20 to 100 Eur per spin.
Set against an imposing Aztec temple in a misty jungle, and with a cheesy Ace of Base style tune running, on the reels you’ll see 5 stone symbols as well as toucan birds, snakes and black panthers. There is also a set of fully stacked symbols which include a male and female warrior, the latter giving you 10 times your stake for 5 across a full payline. Aside from expanding to fully cover the reels when it hits, the Phoenix wild is also the most rewarding symbol as 5 across a payline yields 25 times your stake.
Phoenix Reborn (Play’n GO): Features
Keep an eye out for the ominous looking Aztec sun symbol. This is the scatter and 3, 4 or 5 of them anywhere in view will trigger the Rise of the Phoenix bonus and give you 7, 12 or 20 Free Spins respectively. Additionally, landing another 2, 3, 4 or 5 scatters during the feature initiates a retrigger which will add 3, 7, 12 or 20 extra free spins respectively to your total.
It’s all about the expanding wilds in the Free Spins. On every spin, the Phoenix wild will always appear on a random reel, and if you land a full screen of them, you’ll pocket 1000 times your stake. Like many other Play’n GO slots, Phoenix Reborn is capped at 5000 times your stake so that’s the most you can win in the bonus. The odds of that happening are astronomical, but possible, of course.
Phoenix Reborn (Play’n GO): Verdict
Phoenix Reborn offers few surprises and comes across as an average run-of-the-mill kind of slot. The graphics are of good quality and the game offers decent potential, so it has that going for it at least. However, we can’t help to feel that there should have been more oomph to the bonus. The free spins feature simply doesn’t stick out from the main game as much as we would have liked. Furthermore, 1000x for a full screen of wilds seems rather low seeing it’s a high variance game played on a relatively large 5×6 reel set. Speaking of which, the relatively meagre amount of paylines on such a large set is slightly annoying in all honesty.
Phoenix Reborn is standard Play’n GO stuff, but even when they appear to have invested a bit less effort than usual, the bar is still set high. It’s absolutely not a bad game by any means, but it’s definitely not the greatest to have ever passed the Play’n GO quality control either.
