Nikola Tesla’s Incredible Machine (Rabcat): Overview
Update: we wrongly made the assumption that Rabcat had walked out on their partnership with Microgaming, which is not the case. We would like to apologize to both Rabcat and Microgaming for having shared this wrong information.
In recent years, there’s been a resurgence in Tesla-mania, but the sad truth is that his achievements remained obscured for many years after his passing, and with most of the recognition and fame having been bestowed on Thomas Edison, the Croatian born inventor died bankrupt and preoccupied with pigeons. Nikola Tesla’s Incredible Machine is a captivating alternate-history video slot that explores the implications of a world in which all of Tesla’s energetic, wild, and often maniacal ideas came to life.
Having previously been exclusively under the wing of Microgaming, independent studio Rabcat has now decided to extend their range of projects by joining Yggdrasil Gaming and release their upcoming game as part of the YGS Masters series, a project that allows for smaller developers to reach a wider audience by making use of the Yggdrasil platform. Based on the man famous for his contributions to the design of the modern electricity supply system, this 5-reel, 25-payline slot titled Nikola Tesla’s Incredible Machine comes with an array of features that include exploding wilds, cloned reels and a free spins game in which you can level-up for increased potential. You can enter Tesla’s peculiar world using your computer or mobile device and try your luck from 0.25 to €/£75 per spin.
Playing this slot, it’s intriguing to envision what Nikola Tesla, who was an avid gambler himself, would think of it. Set in, what we assume to be Tesla’s Wardenclyffe lab (which was demolished because he couldn’t pay the mortgage), Tesla can be seen from time to time in the background, taking notes and inspecting his giant, steaming, scintillating machine. Visually, the slot is an absolute masterpiece, designed with state-of-the-art graphics, superb sound effects, and loads of moving parts to make it come alive in a way we’re not entirely used to in this industry. There’s an incredible amount of personality to the game, but the dark, somewhat ominous feel, adds an extra layer of excitement to it.
Aside from the Art Deco style A, K, Q and J royal values, on the reels you will also see an assortment of devices that adds to the Tesla narrative such as capacitors, futuristic goggles, and stopwatches. Out of the standard symbols, the stopwatch is the most lucrative, giving you 40 times your stake for a five of a kind combination. There’s also a wild symbol which is represented by an image of Tesla wearing his futuristic night-vision goggles – it’s of the same value as the top standard symbol.
Nikola Tesla’s Incredible Machine (Rabcat): Features
Nikola Tesla’s Incredible Machine comes with three base game extras that together form part of the Energy Burst feature. It comes into play when one of the standard symbols appear fully stacked on the middle reel. Whilst lower-value symbols will award 3 bonus spins, a stack of premiums will give you 5 bonus spins. Once activated, you will then be randomly awarded one of the following:
- Wild Substitution – one of the standard symbols will act as a wild during the bonus spins.
- Reel Clone – the game will randomly pick three reels that will link to display matching symbol arrangement for all bonus spins.
- Exploding Wild – between two and three symbols are chosen randomly and transformed to locked wilds that remain in place throughout the feature.
Whilst there’s potential to land wins of up to 1000 times your stake in the main game (if you land a full screen of wilds/stopwatches), even greater rewards can come from the Free Spins feature which is played when three or more scatter symbols appear anywhere in view – 3, 4 or 5 scatters will reward you 8, 10 or 12 free spins respectively. Once in, you’ll benefit from a reel set that pays both ways along with a locked wild that’s been added to the central position of the middle reel. Starting at level 1, if a Level-Up symbol appears on any of the reels, you move up one level (up to a maximum of 5). When you level up, another locked wild is randomly added on reels 2 – 4 directly adjacent to the initial locked wild.
Nikola Tesla’s Incredible Machine (Rabcat): Verdict
Going by this first collaborative effort with Yggdrasil Gaming, Rabcat’s move to team up with the Swedish studio undoubtedly proved to be a good move. Although we are fully aware of the fact that Rabcat is capable of delivering visually phenomenal games (look at Forsaken Kingdom for example), Nikola Tesla’s Incredible Machine is the first, in our opinion at least, to offer a solid gaming experience on all fronts, and that includes the actual gameplay as well. Even though the pieces aren’t really original at all, Rabcat puts it all together in a unique way that feels like a cross between video game and slot machine presented in a very compelling noir spirit.
Medium variance, the 4100x potential offered here is not amazing, but the game should, in turn, offer decent value to those seeking some playtime while at the same time being capable of delivering big wins. Nikola Tesla’s Incredible Machine won’t likely appeal to some of the cork-sniffing hard-core gamblers but is almost guaranteed to be a hit with the masses.
