Mystery Reels Megaways (Red Tiger Gaming): Review

In October last year, Red Tiger Gaming became the latest provider to succumb to the Megaways hype by acquiring a license which will see the company expand its portfolio of slots with a whole range of Megaways titles in the years to come. Now, Red Tiger has made outstanding progress as of recent and even grown to become one of the leading providers but adding Megaways to the equation is likely to propel them forward and strenghten their position as we’ve seen in the case of Blueprint Gaming, Relax Gaming and SG Interactive.

Having waited patiently for nearly 6 months, the first product has finally arrived and as some of you have likely figured out already, it’s a fresh take on Mystery Reels, a slot originally released in 2018. Admittedly, we were hoping for an entirely new slot, so there was some disappointment brewing as we set about trying it out. It didn’t take long, however, until we were reminded of the metamorphosis any given slot will undergo with a sprinkle of Megaways mechanics. Just wow, hats off to Big Time Gaming.

Classic Fruit slot is the theme on offer in Mystery Reels Megaways. Powered by Red Tiger Gaming, it’s played using a 6-reel Megaways game engine with cascading reels which can deliver up to 117,649 ways to win. It comes with a randomly triggered Mystery Symbol feature where cloned symbols appear on the reels. There’s also a free spins bonus that, in true Big Time Gaming fashion, allows you to gamble for more free spins…or leave with less than you first arrived with. Shipped with a default RTP of 96.18%, players can enjoy it from 0.20 to 10 Eur per spin.

Visually, it’s rather similar to the original version though on a larger scale to make room for the extra reel and expanded win ways. With few animations and just blurry nothingness in the backdrop, the focus is wholly on the gambling action – a take on the classic fruit slot delivered in a modern package if you will. The reels here are dominated by fruits, namely cherries, lemons, oranges, plums, grapes and watermelons. Moving up in the paytable you’ll also see horseshoes, bells, stars and lucky sevens – the latter being the most valuable giving you 50 times your stake for 6 across a full payline.

Mystery Reels Megaways (Red Tiger Gaming): Features

On any spin in the base game, the Mystery Symbol feature may come into play. When activated, each mystery symbol clones itself a random number of times across the reels before revealing a single symbol.

Though potential for some decent hits in the base game, it all comes down to the free spins feature which gives you 8 spins if you land at least 3 scatter symbols anywhere on the reels. Before the bonus begins you’re taken to a pie wheel gamble where you can either decide to stick to your 8 spins or gamble them in an attempt to win more spins. You can win as many as 40 free spins with relatively little risk (compared to other slots) as you’re always guaranteed at least 4 spins should you lose the gamble. It’s also possible to retrigger the feature with 5 additional spins if you land 3 more scatters in the bonus.

The bonus is played similar to Bonanza and the likes – every time you land a cascade win, the multiplier increases by 1. The multiplier never resets during the feature and there’s no limit to how high it can go. Furthermore, the Mystery Symbol feature applies here as well, triggered randomly to help you land winning combination.

Mystery Reels Megaways (Red Tiger Gaming): Verdict

The Megaways mechanics undoubtedly makes Mystery Reels Megaways more interesting to play compared to the original, and increasing the win potential from 5000x to 10,000 times your stake is, of course, the icing on the cake. Overall, it’s not too different from some of the other Megaways titles out there and it’s not the first time we’ve seen mystery symbols involved either, but it’s a decent start nonetheless.

Admittedly, we were hoping for something a bit more original, but at least we get to enjoy a version of Mystery Reels that feels more relevant, and one that is actually worth playing. Most of all, however, we’re stoked to see that the company has finally started its Megaways journey and we can’t wait to see what’s to come. After all, Red Tiger is a developer with insane momentum right now, producing online slots that are bigger, better and more beautiful than ever before.
