Midas Golden Touch (Thunderkick): Review
History lesson kids! In Greek mythology, the legend of Midas is a myth about the tragedy of greed and narrates what happens when true happiness is not appreciated. Ruler of the ancient kingdom of Phrygia, Midas was a king with an unhealthy obsession for gold and luxury, spending much of his time counting his golden coins. One day, Midas made a wish, asking that everything he touched would turn into gold. Realising his request had come true, Midas was initially full of joy, but as he reached out to hug his beloved daughter, she was consequently turned into a golden statue. Shocked and frightened, Midas prayed to the gods to take this curse from him.
In Thunderkick’s take on the legend of King Midas, there is no moral to the story. If anything, we enter at the peak of his delirium, desperately seeking to turn as many symbols as he possibly can into gold. Utilising a standard 5-reel, 3-row reel set with fixed 15 paylines, Midas Golden Touch comes with a Wild Multiplier feature that can boost your payouts by up to 32x. It all comes down to the Free Spins bonus, however, where the Sticky Respin feature can reward you with heavenly wins of up to 10100 times your stake. You can play it on your desktop computer or mobile device from between 0.10 to 100 Eur per spin.
The artwork in Midas Golden Touch is outstanding as always. Coming from Thunderkick, whose team of designers we know as highly skilled, we expected no less. Set within a Greek temple, the reels are flanked by stone pillars and red banners. In the backdrop, green hills and blue skies contribute to give the slot a rather relaxed vibe. The reels in Midas Golden Touch are dominated by 9, 10, J, Q, K and A royals decorated with gemstones. More rewarding are the chests, goblets and crowns. The top one is King Midas himself – 5 across a full payline will give you 75 times your stake.
An image of King Midas’s magical hands represents the wild which substitutes for all symbol bar the scatter. 5 of them are worth the same as the top symbol, but there’s more to the wild than this, which takes us to the next chapter of our review.
Midas Golden Touch (Thunderkick): Features
Midas Golden Touch comes with a Wild Multiplier feature. Any payline that includes one or more wild symbols will have a multiplier based on the number of wilds included in the actual payline – 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 wilds in a payline will grant you 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x or 32x respectively, which means a wild line is worth 2400 times your stake.
The Free Spins bonus is activated by landing 3, 4 or 5 golden gate scatter symbols simultaneously. The temple now completely turned into gold, you’re awarded 10, 15 or 20 spins respectively. Triggered by any win, it’s all about the Sticky Respin feature here. The winning combinations are locked in position while the remainder of the symbols respin. This continues until no additional winning symbols are locked. Furthermore, a single random wild is placed on the reels at the start of each spin.
Midas Golden Touch (Thunderkick): Verdict
If the previous release, Carnival Queen, took Thunderkick outside of their comfort zone a bit, Midas Golden Touch is more about going back to the basics. We absolutely don’t mind it in this case, however, as it’s a simple, yet compelling slot with a distinct punch line. The massive 10100 times your stake potential makes sure you’re kept on your toes and the Wild Multiplier feature is a nice touch that allows you to hit huge wins even in the main game. Also, the volatility is not crazy high here, so expect a slightly more balanced slot if you’re used to playing high variance.
Overall, we have to say that Thunderkick has succeeded in producing a thoroughly entertaining slot of simplistic nature and with a witty narrative. It won’t win those over who are not into Thunderkick’s particular style, but there’s a good chance most others will get a kick out of playing it.
