Ivan and the Immortal King

Ivan and the Immortal King Introduction

Quickspin’s December release Ivan and the Immortal King is a slot based on the story of Russian folklore hero Ivan Tsarevich, in which he is engaged in a legendary struggle to defeat the immortal king and antagonist Koschei.

In Quickspin’s interpretation, players take on the role as Ivan, who is “neither strong nor smart”, but does possess a great deal of luck which he will need in order to triumph over the evil Koschei and to claim the ill-gotten treasures. To complete his mission, Ivan has to get to Koschei’s soul which is said to be hidden separate from his body inside a needle, which is in an egg, which is in a duck, which is in a hare, which is inside a chest. Unlock the chest and break the needle and the treasure is yours.

In many ways, Ivan is a classic Quickspin slot with characteristics typical of the Swedish developer, which means anyone who’s ever played their slots will feel right at home. The math model, however, is a fresh one with a max win potential far exceeding that of the past, making the new slots more attractive to the otherwise restrictive hardcore gambler target group.

The studio undoubtedly has a knack for creating fairy-tale themed slots – Goldilocks, Big Bad Wolf, The Three Musketeers and Sinbad just to name a few. Ivan fits right in with the group with its colourful, hand-painted, artwork that blends effortlessly into the elegant backdrops. The familiar Russian instrumentals is a nice addition as well, the Korobeiniki tune in particular which many in the west may recognise as the Tetris theme.

This 5-reel, 3-row slot is played with 20 fixed paylines and accepts bets between 0.20 and 100 EUR. Central to the slot is the randomly triggered Baba Yar feature, and more importantly, the free spin feature that comprises a level-up multiplier packed with potential.

Ivan and the Immortal King Symbols & Paytable

The standard symbols are 10 in total represented by 5 low-value gems of various colour and 5 high-paying symbols made out of dragons, wolves, a fairy lady, Ivan the Immortal King, as well as the hero himself, Ivan Tsarevich, who is of highest value out of all symbols. Land 5 of him and you’ll win 100 times your stake. The symbols appear fully stacked on the reels which means that there’s a 2000 times the stake jackpot in the base game. Not bad at all. Also, we must add, the payouts are displayed in cash value relative to your current stake which is great!

As a side note, Koschei the Immortal King, who bears a strong resemblance to the Night King from Game of Thrones, by the way, turns into Koschei the Not So Immortal King when defeated but remains of the same value. A fun little detail nevertheless. The game also comes with a set of special symbols – a wild, a bonus scatter symbol and a progress scatter symbol that only comes into play during the free spin feature.

Baba Yaga Surprise Feature

In Slavic folklore, Baba Yaga is an enigmatic witch who appears as a gnarled and hideous-looking woman. Baba Yaga flies around in a mortar (huh?) and may hinder or help those that she encounters. She’s been cast a central role in Quickspin’s slot and may turn up at any time in both the base game and the free spin feature.

The nice people at Quickspin have decided to upgrade her means of transport, and when she comes flying in on her new premium broom, 4 random adjacent symbols are added to the reels. If lucky, she will give you premium symbols in a winning position, scatter symbols to help trigger the bonus or, when in the midst of the bonus, progress scatter symbols.

Ivan and the Immortal King Free Spins

Free spin feature

Approximately 42% of the RTP is allocated to the free spin feature. While it’s not overly hard to trigger, be prepared for most of the free spin rounds to end in quite low wins as this is a high variance slot. It’s not poorly designed, but rather the nature of the beast.

The free spin feature is triggered by landing 3 or more scatter symbols anywhere on the reels. This can be achieved either by them landing directly in one spin or with the help of Baba Yaga after the spin has been played out. Free spins are awarded accordingly:

  • 3 scatter symbols will start 10 free spins at Chest level.
  • 4 scatter symbols will start 14 free spins at Hare level.
  • 5 scatter symbols will start 18 free spins at Duck level.

Once in the bonus, keep an eye out for the progression scatter as it’s essential for levelling up the multiplier ladder. Collect 3 of them to activate the next multiplier level as well as unlocking 4 additional free spins. There are 6 levels in total and a 20x multiplier waiting for those who reach the top ready to battle Koschei. To help you on your journey, Baba Yaga is in a particularly active mode, so expect her to fly around showing off her new broom.

Ivan and the Immortal King Conclusion

So this is not an innovative slot nor was it meant to be. It’s just as much a classic online slot as Ivan the Immortal is a classic Russian folklore. What you get here is classic Quickspin with a paytable that is more up-to-date and relevant by today’s standards. While there is half-decent potential in the base game, the bonus is, of course, what it’s all about.

Theoretically, it’s got a max win potential of 40,000 times the stake should you land a full-screen top symbol along with the 20x multiplier, although this was never achieved in the 500 billion or so spins carried out during Quickspin’s own testing phase which ended with a max win of 10,222 times the stake. Not close to the theoretical potential, but we’ll take it.
