Hope Diamond

Hope Diamond: Slot Overview

For players who like to leap out of their comfort zones and experience new things, developer Blueprint Gaming has got something unusual to try. Combining diamonds, horses, mines, and miner-ettes, Hope Diamond feels like one of those milkshake slots where everything’s been thrown at it in an attempt to stick, anything. Some may love the eccentricities; others will be head scratchingly mystified. It might not make much sense now, but by the end of the review, well, it probably won’t make much sense then either. With that, we might as well just burrow right in.

Hope Diamond is played out using a basic 5-reel, 20-payline game area, located in a luminescent diamond mine – one of those cartoon mines where precious stones poke out of the walls, so all miners have to do is yank them out and toss them into the cart. At least, that’s the view on the home screen. During the actual game, all you can see is a pastel blur around the reels, while the reel frame is encrusted in stacks of pulsating diamonds. The view is basic, but not devoid of a homely old fashioned feel which some people might enjoy.

Playable on any mobile, tablet or desktop device, Hope Diamond offers stakes as low as 20 p/c per spin, rising as high as £/€500 in some cases. While the theme might not suit everyone, the game’s RTP rating of 96.51% will have few detractors. Volatility will suit those who like a bit of edge to their gaming, though not too much. A medium/high rating means the dips and dives aren’t too extreme.

To win in the diamond mine, you’ll need to land three or more of a kind of all symbols, except the top premium which only needs two to pay out. In regards to symbols, there are 9 pays – four J-A royals, and five highs. The premiums, in ascending order of value, are lanterns, mine carts, ponies, miner ladies, and the logo. Hit full lines of high pays for rewards of 10 – 25 times the stake.

The burning bundle of dynamite sticks is the wild, possessing the same payout value as the highest premium. It replaces any symbol in the game except for scatters or Money Symbols to complete a combination.

Hope Diamond: Slot Features

Hope Diamond – Diamonds Forever feature in action

Hope Diamond has a surprising number of features to augment play. This includes several modifiers, a collection system and two bonus games which are pretty similar. At any moment during the base game, one of four modifiers may randomly flick to life. When active, three diamonds appear on the screen for players to reveal one of them. The resulting modifier is then applied on the next spin:

  • Big Bang Dynamite Wilds – a random number of wilds land on the reels.
  • Colossal Dynamite Wilds – a giant-sized wild will land in a random position turning up to 9 tiles wild.
  • Explosive Dynamite Wilds – when wilds land on the next spin they explode turning more symbols wild.
  • Diamonds Forever Bonus – 6 Money Scatter Symbols are added to the reels, guaranteeing the Diamonds Forever feature is triggered.

Alternatively, Money Scatter Symbols can land at any time during the base game – 6 or more in view trigger the Diamonds Forever feature. When it starts, the triggering Money Scatters are held in place. All other positions spin individually, where only Money Scatter Symbols are active. The round starts with 3 spins, and any new Money Scatter that lands, is locked in place while resetting spins back to 3. The bonus ends when all positions are filled or spins run out, then, the values on each Money Scatter Symbol is added up and paid.

The final feature is the Diamond Trail. In the base game, any Bonus symbol landing in view partly fills the bottom cart on the Diamond Trial located on the left of the reels. Collecting 100 Bonus symbols fills all the carts on the Diamond Trail, triggering Diamond Spins. This feature also starts with three spins, though they cannot be reset. On each spin, only Money Scatters are active but are not held when they land. Each one instantly adds their value to the prize pot, which is paid at the end.

Hope Diamond: Slot Verdict

Hope Diamond starts by sounding like the character from a daytime TV show and doesn’t do much to improve on the first impression. The theme certainly won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, and it isn’t easy to pinpoint who is the target audience here. Bronies perhaps? No one’s judging by the way. Hope Diamond manages to be one of Blueprint’s strangest slots, mixing a My Little Pony feel with a more classily slot friendly mining one. The result is as odd as that probably sounds.

It’s not just the odd theme as evidence of possible creative rut, but the features are rather unoriginal as well. Diamonds Forever is a standard symbol hold feature, and Diamond Spins are quite similar. During testing, Diamond Spins tended to pay the most of the two, yet the most thrilling moment actually came from the Colossal Wild. The fine print in the help docs mentions a win cap of 50,000x, which feels a tad overkill.

Players after a classically inclined slot, with an unusual theme, might find a something of value here, provided they are open-minded. There are quite a few features, though none to get super excited over. Overall, it might be best to file this one in the miscellaneous category. Theme wise, Hope Diamond is unique, you have to give it that, but it teeters more towards straight-up weird rather than quirky. Overall, the RTP is on the friendlier side as is the potential, so it’s not all bad. If the dull theme and unimaginative gameplay doesn’t instantly turn you off, it may be well worth a try.
