Holy Diver Slot: Overview
Formerly best known as a 1983 Heavy Metal super-hit, Holy Diver will now forever be intertwined with Big Time Gaming’s latest and greatest creation. For the first time, players are introduced to the Reel Adventure™ mechanics, a new way of taking on the slots that makes it a truly unique experience. Played on a 6-reel engine (slaps roof of car), this bad boy can fit so many Megaways and, as usually is the case with these guys, it comes packed with potential.
Holy Diver is a fusion of many things, but most obviously it’s an online slot with video game type animations set in the dark ages, although the sunny blue skies do make it appear anything but dark. As we’ve been told, Holy Diver actually dates back to the time of Bonanza but work on it was not completed until now. Visually, it does look like a classic Big Time Gaming slot and bears some resemblance to Dragon Born (2016) in our opinion.
Known for their high potential and ultra high variance slots, it’s the first thing most of us want to know more about when we hear of a new BTG release. Well, in terms of volatility it’s not nearly as brutal as some of the other titles, making it slightly more wager friendly as it seems but the potential is there nonetheless.
On the reels you’ll find low-value A, K, Q, J, 10 and 9 royals as well as 4 gems – the purple one being the most valuable giving you 15 times the stake for 6 across a full payline. If you’re used to playing Bonanza, you will likely be able to tell that the symbols are not nearly of the same value here. It doesn’t mean that the game lacks potential, it’s just delivered in a unique way as you will see.
Holy Diver Slot: Features
It is the newly introduced Reel Adventure™ concept that gives the game its unique structure where players are given the opportunity to upgrade their game, thus allowing more chances to win as well as increasing the potential. Below the reel set, which can fit up to 7 symbols per reel and expand up to 117k win ways in the base game, an animated knight moves along a path and when coming across a treasure chest, which he does roughly every 1 to 5 spins, he kicks it to reveal 1 of 4 reel modifiers:
- Standard Symbol Bonus – One of the low-value symbols is randomly chosen and converted into a wild.
- Sword Bonus – In true Danger! High Voltage fashion, it adds up to 3 full wild reels with a multiplier up to x7.
- Fireball Bonus – Shoots up to 4 wild symbols onto the reels.
- Gem Symbol Bonus* – Awards one or more Gems which are then transformed into wilds. The wilds can come as x2 or x3 multipliers as you push your way through the levels.
Holy Diver does not include a traditional scatter symbol. Instead, players need to collect gems revealed in the chests. It takes 4 of them, one of each colour (you can land all 4 at once), to trigger the bonus feature. However, there’s a twist to it. Instead of playing the free spin feature at progression level 1, you can decline to play the bonus and upgrade to level 2 instead. This will then take you back to the base game where you will play with an upgraded x2 wild multiplier.
Triggering the bonus at level 2 will once again give you the opportunity to either head into the free spins (playing with an x2 multiplier) or upgrade to level 3 which is the final stage. Triggering the bonus at level 3 will leave you no choice but to initiate the free spins now playing with an x3 multiplier. In effect, you actually get to choose your own volatility this way.
10 free spins are awarded when you opt to activate the free spins. It may now dawn on you where the title of the game came from as the 1983 Heavy Metal super-hit Holy Diver kicks in. Oh yeah, baby! In the bonus game, you will have to look out for gems appearing on reels 2 through 5 as these will transform into wilds with multipliers based on your current level. At level 2 and 3, they turn into x2 and x3 wild multipliers respectively.
The heroic knight is with you here as well. Instead of kicking open chests, he battles mystical figures standing in his way. When defeated, these will either leave you empty handed or reveal shiny diamonds. The first 4 diamonds give you +1 spin each and the 5th re-triggers the feature with 8 additional free spins. With every re-trigger, the win ways are increased up to a maximum 586k Megaways. It’s a brilliant design as the the re-trigger is within reach until the very last spin.
Holy Diver Slot: Verdict
Holy Diver delivers a truly unique and innovative experience, and it’s something completely different from what we’ve seen before. The way the game is designed, allowing you to make decisions, whether to level up or go for the bonus, is outstanding and makes you feel involved and as being part of the chain of events. The Reel Adventure™ mechanic, is undoubtedly an interesting concept, but lacks the dynamic greatness of the Megaways engine that has made it so popular.
Whether Holy Diver will be a hit or miss is of course up to the players, but we feel strongly for this game and had a lot of fun playing it in demo mode. You most definitely don’t have to be a Metal Head to enjoy Holy Diver and man, when that song starts blasting in the bonus, we crank the volume to 11 and hope for it to never end.
If you like Holy Diver we suggest you check out Kingmaker which is another Megaways title from Big Time Gaming built around a similar theme.
