Fruit Snap

Fruit Snap (Red Tiger): Overview

A massive 8×8 grid packed with classic fruit slot symbols is what you’ll see when you fire up Red Tiger’s latest creation Fruit Snap. By itself, it doesn’t exactly stand out as avant-garde, but there’s a symbol bar positioned above the game area which tells us there’s likely more to it than what meets the eye – and we’re intrigued to find out exactly what. Going through the introductory welcome screen gives us a bit more information. There, we learn that Fruit Snap is capable of delivering wins of over 3,000 times your stake. It also tells us that there’s a fruit removal feature included in the game as well as a double win upgrade feature, both of which are directly linked to the symbol bar. What it doesn’t tell you is that Fruit Snap is a highly volatile game with a relatively high hit rate that can be played from 0.10 to €/£20 per spin across all devices.

On the audiovisual side of things, Fruit Snap doesn’t steer too far of course when compared to other modern fruit slots available on the market. There’s the usual funky lounge music playing on repeat and a not so surprising neon-pink disco ball backdrop which stands in stark contrast to the colourful symbols. With a luxurious feel, it all comes together quite well, and it undoubtedly makes you want to explore what the game has to offer.

When it comes to the symbols, the reel grid is made up of a selection of classic fruit machine symbols. You have the low-paying strawberries, oranges, cherries, lemons, and watermelons that cascade alongside the more valuable bronze stars, diamonds, dice, bells, and lucky pink 7s. The latter is the most rewarding, giving you 777 times your stake for a cluster of 30+ symbols.

Fruit Snap (Red Tiger): Features

In Fruit Snap, wins are formed when 5 or more matching symbols appear in clusters either horizontally or vertically. Winning clusters are then removed to allow the above symbols to fall into place while new ones are added to fill the empty tiles. Known as the Winning Clusters feature, this gives you a chance to win repeatedly from a single spin.

Remember that symbol bar we mentioned? As it turns out, these are actually individual Symbol Meters. As you’ll be able to tell, each symbol has a corresponding meter positioned above the grid. Now, whenever a winning cluster is formed, the winning symbol will contribute to filling up its corresponding meter. When the meter is full, the game will fire off one of the following two features depending on whether it’s a low-paying symbol or a high-paying symbol (it will only remain active during the current spin/chain-reaction):

  • Fruit Removal – When a low-paying symbol meter has been filled, the symbol is completely removed from the grid and will no longer appear during the current spin.
  • Double Win Upgrade – When a premium symbol meter has been filled, the value of the symbol is doubled. This means that instead of the standard 777x reward, a cluster of 30+ lucky pink 7s will give you 1,554x.

A Meter Bonus may also trigger randomly on a non-winning spin. When activated, one or more symbol types will be randomly chosen and added to their respective meters.

Things get considerably more interesting in the Free Spins feature which comes into play when you land 3 bonus symbols anywhere on the reels on the same spin. Here, the meters will never reset which means that any lower-symbol removed will not come back into play again and upgraded premiums will remain upgraded until the end of the round. Furthermore, you can also retrigger the free spins with 5 extra spins if you land another 3 bonus symbols during the round.

Fruit Snap (Red Tiger): Verdict

Fruit Snap is a middle of the road kind of slot and one that avoids the extremes. That goes for all aspects of it, from the moderate winning potential and generic theme to the lack of creative effort invested into it. Overall, there’s a lot of work to be done before Red Tiger can become a serious contender in the grid slot category which, for now, is dominated mainly by Play’n GO and Push Gaming. Rather than churning out more fruit themed slots, it would be fun to see Red Tiger putting more focus on becoming better at building some narrative, designing unique characters and give the slots some more personality. Another thing that cannot be ignored is the reduction in RTP which has dropped below the 96% mark in this as well as several other recent Red Tiger releases.

So, to summarize. Fruit Snap is a solid product has what it takes to keep you entertained for a good while. But you really have to be into this particular category of slots to keep coming back for more because, honestly speaking, as far as grid slots go, there are far more appealing alternatives out there to choose from.
