Dragon’s Fire Megaways (Red Tiger): Overview
Few slots have attracted as much attention to the Red Tiger brand as the company’s legendary 2018 release Dragon’s Fire, something it continues to do so still to this day. It’s not just that it’s exceptionally beautiful to look at, Dragon’s Fire also has an impressive track record of big hits which has been backed by countless of Youtube uploads and forum screenshots. And if anyone was ever in doubt, it further came to establish itself as a top payer through Casumo’s monthly blog posts of best-performing slots where it has been listed in the January, February, and June editions.
So when the question of which games to be given the Megaways treatment came up in the Red Tiger office, Dragon’s Fire must have been a no-brainer. Before we dig deep into Red Tiger’s third Megaways release, there are a couple of things that need to be addressed regarding Dragon’s Fire Megaways that might spoil the magic a bit for some. Popping the hood to look at the hardware, it’s interesting to note that the 95.72% RTP is identical to Golden Leprechaun Megaways which we reviewed just a couple of days ago. The win potential is also nearly the same, coming in at 10,470x for Dragon and 10,479x for Leprechaun. While this could be a coincidence (we don’t think so), it’s not unlikely to think that both slots were crafted using the same mathematical template. It’s not a deal-breaker in any way, but merely an observation made by slot dorks.
Here’s more technical detail for you. Dragon’s Fire Megaways utlilises a 6-reel formation that can produce up to 117,649 ways to win and brings with it some new features as well as all the goodies from the original, such as the randomly triggered Fire Blast feature where up to 4 wilds or 2 scatters can be added to the reels and the Dragon’s Egg Multiplier which has the ability to give your winning combos a 50x multiplier boost. Add to that a Dragon’s Eye Boost that can further enhance your payouts along with a free spins feature with massive potential, and you could very well be in for a thrilling session.
Heading back once again into the dragon’s lair, the game continues from where the original left off. There’s still the sight of the armoured beast watching over the reels, ready to strike at any spin should you even dare to peak at his treasury. And that alluring fiery egg of his still stands where we left it. On the glossy reels you’ll see a collection of dragon eggs as well as 4 premium dragon symbols of which the golden dragon is the most rewarding, giving you 5 times your stake for six on a full payline. The most lucrative of all symbols, however, is the dragon’s eye which gives you 50 times your stake for six of a kind. The flame is the wild; it appears on all reels and substitutes for all regular symbols.
Dragon’s Fire Megaways (Red Tiger): Features
There is a whole heap of features to recount, so hold on to your hat. First and foremost, however, this is a slot that makes use of the Megaways game engine which means that every spin here awards a random number of win ways depending on how many symbols appear on each reel (between 2 – 7). Moreover, winning combinations are blasted away and replaced with new symbols, giving you a chance to win repeatedly from a single spin.
The first “real” feature, however, is the Fire Blast feature. When randomly activated, the dragon may breathe fire onto the reels to ignite up to 3 reels. From this, up to 4 wilds on each of the 3 reels may be revealed or, if only 2 reels are lit up, 2 scatter symbols for an enhanced opportunity to land the bonus.
Next, there is the Dragon’s Egg Multiplier which comes into play on every successive winning spin. It increases the egg multiplier by 1 with each subsequent consecutive win up to a maximum of 50x and reverts back to zero on a non-winning spin. On any winning spin, the Dragon’s Eye Boost may also activate to further boost the Dragon’s Egg Multiplier by up to 10x.
Keep an eye out for the scatter symbols as 3 or more in view will initiate the Free Spins round. Doing so will present you with three dragon symbols from which you need to pick one – this will reveal a random number of free spins. Now, if the Dragon’s Egg Multiplier was active during the triggering spin, the multiplier value is carried over into the bonus where it will continue to increase regardless of any dead spin. Moreover, each win cascade will also increase the egg multiplier by 1 and will never reset during the round. After the round has been played, the active multiplier is carried over back into the base game.
And oh, you can also get some help triggering the bonus with the Dragon’s Kindness feature – when 2 scatter symbols appear in view, the dragon may randomly breathe fire on the reels to add more scatter symbols.
Dragon’s Fire Megaways (Red Tiger): Verdict
Initially, we were stoked to hear of a Megaways version of Dragon’s Fire as it happens to be one of Red Tiger’s finest games. Megaways and fire-breathing dragons, what could possibly go wrong? Well, having had the opportunity to compare the two side by side, things just don’t seem to make much sense.
First of all, seeing that both versions offer the same win potential is rather disappointing, especially since we’ve become so used to the Megaways concept taking things to the next level. You can’t help but wonder what the point is adding all those thousands of paylines when the fixed 20 could accomplish the same greatness. Sure, the Megaways engine and its cascading reels extend the playtime and all, but still. Then there is the RTP issue. For some reason, the RTP in the Megaways version is slightly lower than the original which makes even less sense than our first point and which might prove to be a complete deal-breaker for savvy players, however insignificant the difference may be.
We so badly looked forward to Dragon’s Fire Megaways, but these “flaws” are going to be hard to ignore, we have to admit. In terms of entertainment value, Dragon’s Fire Megaways comes out on top, there’s no doubt about that, but overall it just feels like a completely wasted opportunity, unfortunately.
If you’d like to try other Red Tiger classics that have received similar Megaways treatment we suggest you look up Dragon’s Luck Megaways which offer wins of up to 10,000 times your stake.
