Dork the Dragon Slayer

Dork the Dragon Slayer (Blueprint Gaming): Overview

Dork the Dragon Slayer is a video slot like you’ve never seen before. The story, provided through delightful animation, sends Dork on an adventure to rescue the princess and free the villagers from the mischievous dragons. She’s being held captive by a gang of quirky-looking dragons and it’s up to Dork to take them on, to put an end to the terror, and claim the reward. Of course, Dork has likely just deployed his vivid imagination in a wild-child narrative to create a knight who battles dragons and scores a kiss from the gorgeous princess, or has he?

On the surface, it appears Dork the Dragon Slayer is an entirely unique creation. In reality, it’s built using the same template as Goodfeathers, which essentially means it’s a clone. If you’re not familiar with that game, then it really doesn’t matter. If, on the other hand, you have played it and didn’t like it that much, Dork might still be worth looking into as it has plenty of personality and twists to make it stand out as a rather unique creation.

Dork the Dragon Slayer is a 5 reel, 20 payline slot developed by UK based provider Blueprint Gaming. This feature-heavy offering is played using cascading reels where winning symbols are removed and replaced with new ones. Moreover, it comes with three randomly triggered base game modifiers that give you stacked wilds, wild transformation and symbol transformation guaranteed to bring in a win. The main event, however, is the Dragon Slayer free spins bonus where you battle different dragons – defeat them all and you will be awarded the all-important Hero Spins. You can join Dork on his medieval adventure on any device from 0.20 to €/£500 per spin.

It’s hard to ignore how great this game looks. With vibrant graphics, in the background you’ll see medieval pavilions form part of the picturesque backdrop of the knight’s tournaments. It’s the animations that really stand out here, however. For comedic effect, you’ll see things like Dork riding across the screen on his stick horse, and if you progress far enough if the bonus, you might get to see a dragon fart Dork in the face (don’t ask). Spinning on the reels you’ll see J, Q, K and A royal values alongside lances, swords, sunset banners and Dork the Dragon Slayer banners. The latter is the most rewarding, giving you 25 times your stake for a five of a kind combination. The wacky-looking dragon on a wanted poster is the wild – it substitutes for all regular symbols bar the scatter.

Dork the Dragon Slayer (Blueprint Gaming): Features

Dragon Slayer free spins in action

Like most Blueprint slots, Dork the Dragon Slayer comes packed with features. On any spin in the base game, one of the following three reel modifiers might trigger randomly:

  • Wanted Wilds – When triggered, up to three fully stacked wilds are dropped onto the reels.
  • Fireball Wilds – A dragon flies across the screen and fires at certain symbols to turn them into wilds.
  • Scorched Reels – The reels are scorched, revealing a different set of symbols, guaranteed to give you a win.

The real fun starts when you trigger the Dragon Slayer Free Spins round which is achieved by landing four consecutive wins (displayed to you via the dragon wanted panel to the left of the reel set). Now, after a short animated transition, you’ll see Dork on the left and a dragon on the right. Battle will then commence – during any spin, one of the following special symbols can appear:

  • Dork: Attacks the dragon, reducing its health.
  • Dragon: If the symbol of the dragon being fought appears, it attacks Dork, reducing his health.
  • Shield: Protects Dork from the next dragon attack (can only be used once).
  • Dragon Poison: Kills the dragon outright.
  • Health Potion: Restores Dork to full health.

If Dork defeats this dragon, he’ll progress to the next level where yet another dragon awaits. There is no set number of free spins to keep track of. Instead, the feature continues until Dork is either defeated by one of the dragons or he has slain all four dragon enemies. Defeating the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th dragon will apply a 2x, 3x, 4x, or 5x multiplier respectively to your total win. If Dork vanquishes all his foes, you’ll also get to play the Hero Spins. With a random number of spins rewarded, it gives you an additional opportunity to collect wins after which the 5x multiplier will be applied.

Dork the Dragon Slayer (Blueprint Gaming): Verdict

Having already played Goodfeathers and being aware of the fact that it’s a clone undoubtedly takes away some of the magic. Even if the features are unique, they’re just different visual presentations of what is essentially the same mathematical design. In all honesty, we weren’t huge fans of Goodfeathers, which means Dork doesn’t fully win us over either as it suffers from the same drawbacks as its sibling. The base game payouts are, for the most part, not very exciting, and, unless you trigger the hero spins, it seems highly unlikely you’re going to pocket any substantial wins (although time will tell).

For those just looking for an entertaining slot, however, Dork the Dragon Slayer will surely do the trick as it’s easy on the eyes, comes packed with features, and has a tendency to give you excellent value for your money in terms of playtime.
