Champions of Rome

Champions of Rome (Yggdrasil Gaming): Review

Fact of the day: Though regularly dismissed as primitive brutes by Roman historians, the gladiators were in fact superstars of their time and gained massive fame among the lower classes. Portraits of the fighters graced the walls of public areas; kids played with gladiator action dolls made of clay and the most prominent combatants even endorsed products similar to the elite sports professionals of today.

Through the world of iGaming, the legacy of ancient Rome lives on and there’s certainly no shortage of gladiator-themed slots. In this 5-reel, 20-payline Yggdrasil Gaming powered game, the mighty Colosseum is once again the focus of attention where armoured warriors prepare to do battle for big wins. Playable on all devices from 0.20 to 100 Euros per spin, Champions of Rome comes with a Gladiator feature that awards 4 wilds when activated. There’s also a free spins bonus with 2 different modes on offer in which a 4x multiplier can be added to your total win.

With a gladiator narrative, Champions of Rome is a superb example of visual craftmanship by a company with heavy focus on design and entertainment, and as we’ve come to expect from Yggdrasil, the visual presentation is of the highest quality. Set in the Colosseum in the heyday of the Roman empire, the reels are enclosed in a stone temple crowned by the Roman Aquila. Though static and wallpaper-like, the backdrop illustrating cheering crowds is a superb piece of art.

On the reels you’ll come across low-value metal, bronze, silver and gold coins and 3 medium-value animals carved in stone. 3 gladiators represent the premiums out of which the red one is the most rewarding giving you 60 times your stake for 5 across a full payline. The Roman eagle is the wild and substitutes for all standard symbols. Worth nothing is that none of the symbols appear stacked on the reels in the base game.

Free spin feature

In the base game, landing 2 scatter symbols anywhere on the reels triggers the Gladiator feature at which point one of the following 3 weapons are thrown at the reel set to produce 4 wild symbols:

  • The sword – gives you a double stacked wild and 2 single wilds
  • The mace – gives you 2 double stacked wilds
  • The trident – gives you 4 random wilds

To gain access to the free spins bonus you will have to land a minimum 3 scatter symbols anywhere on the reels – 5 will give you 600 times your stake. In accordance with recent trends, there’s a bonus drop feature included as well which allows you to buy the bonus to a cost of 50x. Once triggered you’ll have the option to choose between 2 bonus modes. In the next step, a random gladiator is selected to replace all premium symbols and (as described above) their weapons will be used to award 4 wilds. Also look out for the special Beast symbol. If a wild lands on it, an extra free spin is granted. Those are the fundamentals of the free spin feature explained – Now, these are 2 modes laid out in detail:

  • Training free spins mode – 8 regular free spins are played.
  • Deathmatch free spins mode – Includes 3 levels, each with a 450 coin win target. You can choose to play with 7, 6 or 5 free spins with a 2x, 3x or 4x multiplier respectively. However, the multiplier is only added to your total winnings IF you win at least 450 coins (22.5x). If you don’t, the winnings are declared forfeit and replaced with a consolation prize that can consist of either a cash prize of 2 – 10 times your stake or 5 training mode free spins.

Champions of Rome (Yggdrasil Gaming): Conclusion

Champions of Rome is a medium variance slot with mediocre win potential. Unfortunately, the max win is not stated anywhere which can only mean one thing – it’s likely not attractive enough to advertise. With little potential on offer in the base game, it all comes down to the free spins bonus and the Deathmatch mode in particular. For the most significant wins you’ll have to opt for the most volatile option which is level 3 with the 4x multiplier. Also, in the free spins bonus, the high pay symbols appear double stacked, thus substantially increasing the win potential. With that in mind, it should theoretically be possible to land wins of around 3000 times your stake if extremely lucky.

Admittedly, Champions of Rome is not the best slot we’ve seen from Yggdrasil despite the outstanding visual presentation. The base game is rather tedious, offering little to no excitement and the highlights are few and far between. Mathematically it’s not their best effort but if you’re curious about new Yggdrasil games we do recommend to give it a try in order to make up your own mind.
