Cash Vandal (Play’n GO): Review

In case you’re wondering what the header is all about, it’s from an old meme that seemed to fit our review quite well. After all, it’s hard not to think of the endless runner mobile game Subway Surfers when you see the artwork in this Play’n GO slot. Thankfully, the developers decided against going for Hugo type gameplay or otherwise it would have been a tad suspicious, we’re sure you agree.

Something that immediately stands out when you fire up Cash Vandal is the somewhat unusual 4-reel, 10-payline setup. In an era where slot creators do their utmost to stretch the limits of win ways, Play’n GO has defiantly gone the opposite direction here which in a way suits the rebellious spirit of the theme. Three and five reel slots are industry standard and have been since forever, even six reels are nothing out of the ordinary, but four? That’s just freaky. Anyway, there’s a lot more to this slot than you would think could fit in such compact format. The volatility is high, the potential too and there’s definitely some nail-biting action here in case you’re wondering.

In Cash Vandal, you’re invited to go on a spree to wreak havoc in the train networks across three of Europe’s largest cities – Paris, London and Berlin. With the city skyline in the background, the reels are set within a railway carriage. There you’ll see graffiti style cherries, blueberries, raspberries, oranges and watermelons as well as bundles of cash, gold bars and diamonds. The latter is the principal standard symbol, worth 10 times your stake if you land 4 of a kind. The wild is even more lucrative, however. Land 4 on a payline and you’ll pocket 50 times your stake.

Cash Vandal (Play’n GO): Features

Free spins feature – random wilds

Aside from the regular symbols, look out for the spray cans. If you land a golden spray can scatter on reel 4 without any other spray can symbol in view, the Re-Spin feature comes into play. When so happens, the 4th reel is held in place while the other reels go for a re-spin. Now, if 1 spray can land on any other reel, the City feature is triggered. If 2 spray cans land, you’ll instead gain access to the free spins bonus.

In the City feature, 1 free spin is awarded with a stacked wild on reel 4 along with an extra reel modifier  – each modifier being represented by one of the three cities previously mentioned. After the spin has been played, the modifier, and the city related to it, shifts. To highlight this shift, a short animated cut scene is played out in which you’re taken on a train ride between the cities. The modifiers are as follows:

  • Paris – the modifier synchronises reels 1 and 2, combining them into a 2×2 mega symbol.
  • London – between 2 to 9 mystery symbols are added to reels 1, 2 and 3. As the reels come to a stop, the mystery symbols transform to reveal matching symbols.
  • Berlin – in this modifier you’ll see 2 or 3 wilds randomly added to reels 1, 2 and 3.

To trigger the Free Spins bonus you will have to land the golden spray can on reel 4 together with 2 or 3 spray cans on any other reel. This will give you 5 or 10 free spins respectively. First off, you’re offered the opportunity to pick one of the modifiers above – Paris, London or Berlin. Not only will these modifiers apply on every spin, you’ll also benefit from a full stack of wilds on reel 4. The maximum payout per single spin here may only be 500 times your stake, but seeing there’s a chance for endless retriggers there are much larger wins to go for than that. As often is the case with Play’n GO, however, there’s a max cap of 5000 times your stake.

Cash Vandal (Play’n GO): Verdict

Cash Vandal is indeed a mischievous slot that, despite a missing 5th reel, manages to pack a punch. It’s far from groundbreaking as you have seen, but the cramped reel set and the relatively high symbol count seems to increase the hit frequency which also makes it a rather busy slot in spite of the high volatility.

With that said, it still has that typical Play’n GO aura to it so it doesn’t feel entirely fresh, though we do appreciate the effort to make it stand out from the rest of the catalogue. Overall, it’s a competent slot that will appeal to most players as it’s both entertaining and potent enough to dish out massive wins. So there you have it – something different, but not too far out.
